Horsell celebrates as Council agrees vital upgrade to community facilities

March 11, 2011

Today’s Executive Meeting of Woking Borough Council (WBC) brought some much-needed good news for Horsell’s Scouts and Guides and local groups.

£1.7 million investment in Horsell sports and community facilities

Following 18 months of discussion between WBC and local community groups, the Committee has agreed to include £1.7 million in its Investment Programme to update vital Horsell amenities such as the Scouts & Guides headquarters, the Village Hall and the sports areas in Queen Elizabeth park.

The funding will come from the Government’s Community Assets Fund. It will be used to:

· replace the existing dilapidated Scouts and Guides HQ with a new building on a site behind the existing hut
· provide disabled access and additional meeting/changing space in the Village Hall
· provide improved vehicular access and pedestrian routes
· create additional car and cycle parking
· install a new floodlit, multi-use games area and a new tennis court in Queen Elizabeth Gardens
· provide disabled access to the existing public toilets
· improve the appearance of the village centre with new planting in front of the Hall and the Institute buildings and along the front of the QE Gardens.

Next steps will be to get the paperwork ready for the planning application, which will be submitted in the Autumn. It’s anticipated that the development will take approximately 32 months to complete. The priority will be to build the new Scouts and Guides HQ.

Horsell Village Show 24 July 2010

April 14, 2010

My favorite Horsell event, Horsell Village Show (and yes, I am going to show a bias towards homemade Victoria Sponge cakes here) will take place on Saturday 24 July at Horsell Village Hall. The Village Show takes place every year, and just gets bigger and better. With lots of activities on the day for families, the centrepiece is the traditional Show format, with awards for everything from homemade chutneys to the best ‘garden in a seed tray’ (children only for that one!).

This year there will be two new awards for the youngsters – the most huumungus marrow, and a paper plane competition. I’m hoping they’ll make an adults category for the latter, as I’d love to see how far I can make a page from The Resident fly.

There’s a new-look website for the Horsell Village Show this year at www.horsellvillageshow.co.uk and we’ll also be running regular updates on this site, so keep an eye out for the latest news.

The Show Committee are always glad of volunteers to help, either by joining the Committee or on the day. If you have some spare time and would like to contribute towards making the Show extra special this year, please contact them. Details are on the Show website.

HRA Annual General Meeting – a great turnout

April 12, 2010

I attended my first Annual General Meeting as an official Committee member on 7 April 2010. If I’m honest I’m not sure I was expecting such a large turnout for what is, as AGMs often are, a fairly technical meeting to elect officers and approve the accounts.

Well, over 70 residents made the effort to come to the Village Hall, despite BBC’s Question Time being recorded live at the HG Wells Centre on the same night.  We even ran out of chairs!(Luckily I was sitting on the stage taking photos, otherwise it would have been the floor for me.)

Rob Harris, our Chair, ran through his report quickly, and Janice Worgan, our outgoing Treasurer presented the accounts, in the black thanks to her tight financial management. A full report with photos will appear in the June issue of The Resident.

We were then proud to present David Robbins and Paul Rimmer from the Horsell Common Preservation Society, who gave a great talk about the history of the Common and HCPS, and its management today, including the successes such as McLaren’s involvement with Heather Farm and helping to save Pyrford Common. HCPS, like Horsell Residents’ Association, is a members organisation, and relies on members subscriptions for funding. If you enjoy walking or cycling on the Common, please consider becoming a member.

The Bedser legacy

April 11, 2010

Sir Alec Bedser, England cricketing hero and one-time Horsell resident, died last Sunday at the age of 91. Sir Alec was a fast-medium bowler who took many wickets for England and Surrey County Cricket Club throughout his career, even bowling out Australian legend Don Bradman. His identical twin, Eric, also played cricket and the two were known for swopping half way through an innings as a practical joke, as no one could tell them apart.

The twins had a long history of being involved with Horsell community life. In the 1970’s, Sir Alec ran a youth sports club at the Village Hall, and signed photos of them both are now on display in the Hall. When Eric died in 2006, part of his bequest to the Horsell Residents’ Association was used to fund an annual sports award for pupils attending Horsell’s schools – the Bedser Award.  Horsell Common Preservation Society was also proud that Sir Alec agreed to give the Bedser name to a new accessible track through Horsell Common, which is being built by volunteers.

The twins (Eric was the older by 10 minutes) were brought up in their aunt’s house in Anthonys. They walked to school across Horsell Common, and sang in the choir at All Saints Church, Woodham, where  their cricketing potential shone through at church matches. In his later years, Sir Alec lived in Carlton Road, not far from the Common.

Their heyday was the 1940’s and 50’s, shortly after the Second World War, when both Alec and Eric were selected for the England squad. Thanks to a sterling bowling career, plus his commitment to the sport (he was a selector for later England squads), Sir Alec was appointed OBE in 1964, CBE in 1982, and in 1997 became the only England bowler ever to be knighted. He was President of Surrey in 1987-88, and was, for a time, the oldest England Test player living.

[Edited 12/05/2010] According to getsurrey.co.uk, Sir Alec’s funeral will be held at All Saints Church, Woodham, Woking on 20 April.
