March 26, 2013

On Saturday 20th April, the Goldsworth Park Safer Neighbourhood Team are holding a community fundraising day to raise money for the Goldsworth Park Community Association charity: The Goldsworth Park Big Pull Together.

The GPCA is a community-based charity that runs the community centre at Goldwater Lodge for the residents of Goldsworth Park and host annual events and competitions, and produce the local newsletter. Unfortunately in early December 2012 their community centre and Toad Hall Nursery was victim to arson and suffered extensive damage. Since then the hall has been unusable leaving the GPCA without a home.

Big Pull FinalThe aim of the Goldsworth Park Big Pull Together is to bring local residents together, increase fire safety awareness and raise money for the GPCA charity which has given so much to the community.

The Goldsworth Park Big Pull Together will be running from 11am till 4pm on Saturday 20th April at Goldsworth Park Lake with several fun attractions on the day.

  • Time Trial event towing a police van 1 mile around Goldsworth Park Lake between Surrey Police, Surrey Fire and Rescue, Woking Borough Council and Waitrose
  • Chip pan fire safety demonstrations from Surrey Fire and Rescue
  • Bouncy Castles
  • Cake Stalls
  • Bicycle Races with Charlotteville Rascals for children and young people
  • Bicycle repair workshop and property marking
  • Fishing Competition
  • Guided tour of the area
  • Raffles and much more!

Come down on the day and show your support. If anyone would like to get involved on the day, or would like more information, please contact PCSO Sarah Wentworth at woking@surrey.police.uk or telephone 101, extension 39944.

Horsell Sports Ground Association

March 12, 2013

The Horsell Sports Ground Association, Brewery Road, is home to the Woking & Horsell Cricket Club, Football Club, and Squash Club. All residents of Horsell over the age of 18 are members of the Association; you are entitled to nominate applicants to sit on the Management Committee and to attend the Annual General Meeting to be held on 22nd April 2013, at the Sports Pavilion, commencing at 7pm.

The Management Committee comprises four Members nominated by the Cricket Club, Football Club, Horsell Residents’ Association and the Squash Club. Four Members will also be elected from residents of Horsell at the AGM.

The Association was formed in 1921 with the intention to provide a sports ground and social club for Horsell; the Cricket and Football clubs were granted tenancy. In 1922, the Cricket Club funded a pitch, and the Association built the pavilion. Over the next decade, the grounds established tennis courts, a putting green, held a flower show, were used by the Scouts, and held schools sports events.

Over the years, founder members/Trustees dwindled, such that in 1993 the land became Bona Vacantia, owned by the Crown. This resulted in a proposal for Tesco Supermarket warehouse, a scheme for affordable housing, both unwanted and inappropriate developments.

In 1995, the Horsell Residents’ Association provided support to the last remaining Trustee. Complicated and protracted negotiations took place between our appointed Solicitors, the National Playing Fields Association, the Treasury Solicitor, and the Charity Commission in order to create a new Trust. The new HSGA held its Founding Meeting in December 2001, and the transfer of the land to the NFPA as Custodian Trustees took place a few months later. The HSGA Trustee Management Committee was elected responsible for managing the Trust. The Constitution of the HSGA governs the activities permitted on the ground, held in Trust for the residents of Horsell, which cannot be used for development except under the conditions of the Constitution.

The sports ground is a vital part of the Horsell community, thanks to a small number of dedicated residents who overcame, against all the odds, unwanted commercial interests.

If you value the Sports Ground and wish to join the HSGA Committee please arrange for a nomination letter to be sent before 20th March 2013 to The Honorary Secretary, Horsell Sports Ground Association, 64 Brewery Road, Horsell, GU21 4QH.

David Bromley
Chair, HSGA

Horsell Garden Safari in June – please open your garden!

March 11, 2013

The weekend of 15th and 16th June will host the 11th year of Horsell Garden Safari and the key to making it work is NEW gardens.

Since 2002, the Horsell Garden Safari has given us all the opportunity to visit our village gardens, to share gardening stories, meet old friends and new, and enjoy a cuppa and cake sitting beneath a parasol and enjoying the fruits of someone else’s labour! All the proceeds go to support Horsell Village Hall, which is undergoing extensive refurbishment. This is such an important building for the village for residents to use and enjoy. We need your help to make this year as successful as ever!

We need six to eight unexplored gardens this time, as well as those of the regulars who have supported us over the years. Do you have a garden that you would like to open, or do you have a neighbour who has a lovely garden?

Let’s make this the best ever Garden Safari, with gardens we have come to love open again and many new gardens to visit for the first time.

So who can open their garden?

Anyone can who loves gardening, whether your garden is big or small, wild flowers and eco-friendly or manicured; flowers, veg or patio; sun-drenched or shaded. Please check below, because we are inviting not only keen gardeners, but have some new ideas:

  • You can open for one or both days; please let us know your preference.
  • You can open your front or back garden or both, your patio full of bright flowers or ferns, small or large; it is not a competition!
  • Your children may have their own garden they would like to show off.
  • A garden with historical interest (it may have been a former nursery, farm, forge, mill, prison, brewery, school or have an air raid shelter).
  • A house with a history – just to go into the garden and look at from the outside!
  • Communal; a close or street where gardeners may like to open together.
  • A pub garden.
  • A school garden.

Optional extras, which you may be able to offer, will add extra and sometimes new interest to the day:

  • Refreshments.
  • Plant sales.
  • Homemade cakes, jams, crafts; if you would like to sell your homemade produce or work, you could sell in your own garden or a friend’s, please ask.
  • An ‘eye-spy’ quiz for children and young at heart! Please let us know if you have an interesting plant, animal or feature in your garden that we could include in a quiz.

Saturday 15 June, at 10.30am, will see the official opening of the Pares Woodland Garden which is being restored by volunteer Horsell residents.

Please support the Garden Safari, by opening your garden and by buying the schedule (£7) in local shops, for a full weekend of neighbourly fun. Don’t be shy! Let us know now if you can open your garden.

Plant Sale for Woking Community Hospital

We have also linked up with the Friends of Woking Community Hospital (WCH) and its annual plant sale will be held in the open garden at Little Upton, Ridgeway during Safari weekend.

The sale will raise funds for the Bradley Unit at WCH, a centre of excellence for neuro rehabilitation services in Surrey. The new, larger unit will have 20 beds, serving patients with brain damage or mobility problems following strokes or car accidents. The NHS can only provide conventional showers, which mean that patients need help to wash themselves and when using the toilets. Therefore funds from the plant sale will go towards a new wet room with wheelchair access, together with hoists and slings.
